In this project, we simulated the behavior of wind flowing over an obstacle using an approximated model of the Navier-Stokes equation and Computational Fluid Dynamics software.

Von Karman Vortex Street

This image illustrates the complex dynamics of wind flowing over and around a disturbance. In this case, the "disturbance" is an entire island, but modeling assumptions allow us to approximate this behavior in a variety of circumstances.

Navier-Stokes Equation

This equation is a fundamental governing equation for fluid dynamics, relating the conservation of momentum to the diffusion of energy via viscosity and pressure gradients.

Galerkin Approximation

After some assumptions, modifications, and approximations, the Navier-Stokes equation can be numerically approximated according to this equation.

CFD Mesh for the Von Karman Vortex Street

This mesh is what we numerically solved over to obtain a solution to the approximated Navier-Stokes equation.
